Netanyahu Defends Trump’s ‘Gaza Takeover’ Plan: “What’s Wrong With It?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended former U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion to displace Palestinians from Gaza, saying there was “nothing wrong with it.” His comments, made during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, have sparked fresh debates over the future of the war-torn region.

Trump’s proposal, which includes permanently relocating Palestinians and even a potential U.S. takeover of Gaza, has been widely condemned by human rights organizations as ethnic cleansing. However, Netanyahu appeared to embrace at least part of the plan, arguing that Palestinians should be allowed to leave Gaza if they choose.

“What’s Wrong With That?”

While Netanyahu did not directly address Trump’s suggestion of a U.S. administration over Gaza, he supported the idea of voluntary relocation.

“I mean, what’s wrong with that?” he said. “They can leave, they can then come back, they can relocate and come back. But you have to rebuild Gaza.”

He dismissed concerns that Trump’s comments implied U.S. military involvement in the conflict or that Washington would take responsibility for reconstruction efforts.

“This is the first good idea that I’ve heard,” Netanyahu added. “It’s a remarkable idea, and I think it should be really pursued, examined, pursued and done, because I think it will create a different future for everyone.”

International Backlash Against Trump’s Proposal

Trump first floated the idea on January 25, calling for Arab nations like Egypt and Jordan to take in displaced Palestinians from Gaza. However, both Arab governments and Palestinian leaders swiftly rejected the idea, stating that any forced displacement would be unacceptable.

Global human rights groups, as well as several international leaders, have condemned the proposal. Critics argue that forcibly removing an entire population from their homeland violates international law and human rights conventions.

The Ongoing Crisis in Gaza

Israel’s military operations in Gaza have led to devastating humanitarian consequences. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in the past 16 months due to Israel’s offensive. The war has also resulted in mass internal displacement, with nearly the entire population of Gaza forced to flee their homes. Food shortages and a collapsing infrastructure have further worsened the crisis.

The latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 Israelis dead and led to approximately 250 hostages being taken, according to Israeli sources.

While a fragile ceasefire is currently in place, tensions remain high as both sides struggle with the long-term implications of the war. Netanyahu’s support for Trump’s displacement idea only adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation.

What Comes Next?

As debates over Gaza’s future continue, Netanyahu’s endorsement of Trump’s proposal raises questions about Israel’s long-term strategy. Whether this idea gains traction or faces further rejection from the international community remains to be seen. However, with ongoing military operations, a humanitarian crisis, and diplomatic tensions at their peak, the path forward for Gaza remains uncertain.
