Iran’s Economic Ambition Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, announced on Saturday that the country needs approximately $100 billion in foreign investment to achieve its ambitious goal of 8% annual economic growth, a significant increase from the current rate of 4%.
First Presidential Address In his first live televised interview since taking office in July, Pezeshkian outlined the financial requirements for this growth. He emphasized that while the total needed investment could reach up to $250 billion, more than half of that amount could be sourced domestically. Pezeshkian noted that achieving an 8% growth in GDP would be crucial in reducing Iran’s double-digit inflation and unemployment rates.

Sanctions and Economic Challenges Pezeshkian addressed the challenges posed by international sanctions, which target a wide array of Iranian entities and individuals, including the central bank, government officials, and those accused of supporting Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and various militant groups. Despite these sanctions, Pezeshkian expressed his administration’s commitment to tackling the inflation rate, currently exceeding 40% annually, by improving relations with neighboring countries and the global community.
Diplomatic Moves Looking ahead, Pezeshkian confirmed that his first official visit abroad would be to neighboring Iraq. Following that, he plans to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22-23. During his time in the U.S., Pezeshkian intends to meet with Iranian expatriates, particularly the 1.5 million living in the United States, to encourage them to invest in Iran’s future.
A New Approach Seen as a reformist, Pezeshkian took office last month and quickly garnered approval for his cabinet from parliament. His leadership marks a shift from the more hardline stance of his predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi, who was closely aligned with Iran’s supreme leader and who died in a helicopter crash in May. Pezeshkian has signaled a willingness to adopt a softer tone in both domestic and international affairs, including efforts to revive the nuclear deal abandoned by the U.S. in 2018.
