Instead, their flight was canceled, and they were left waiting at the airport for days. “It totally ruined what should have been our dream holiday,” Melanie said. “We have lovely memories, but we came back absolutely shattered. It was complete chaos.”

Their travel provider, Tui, eventually gave them a £400 voucher, but the damage had already been done.

Frustration Mounts for Families

Elsewhere, Laura and Malcolm Jones from Pontypool, Wales, faced a similar ordeal while trying to return home from Rhodes. Their flight was canceled after they had already boarded the plane. Passengers were left in the dark with no information, no return of luggage, and no plan for how to proceed. The Jones family spent 16 hours at the airport before being transferred to a conference center, where frustrated travelers resorted to using tablecloths as blankets.

The family eventually paid £560 out of pocket to fly back to the UK a few days later. Despite receiving a £600 voucher from Tui, Laura said the experience had soured her on international travel. “I was looking forward to traveling abroad again after Covid, but I think I might just stick to going to west Wales for a few years,” she joked.

Tui has since issued an apology to its customers, but it wasn’t the only airline affected by the outage. Delta Airlines in the United States canceled around 7,000 flights over five days, prompting an investigation by US authorities and several legal actions.

Small Businesses Suffer Significant Losses

While the impact on large industries like healthcare and travel was severe, small businesses were also hit hard. Dawn Watts, a sole trader from Market Drayton, Staffordshire, runs a website that supplies cleaning products to companies and hotels. When her website went offline during the outage, she lost approximately £600 in sales. “It is extremely worrying,” she said. “I am a sole trader – I can’t have this happening again.”

Dawn’s concerns are shared by many small business owners who rely on digital platforms for their day-to-day operations. Without the support of large corporations, these entrepreneurs face greater risks in the event of IT failures.

Boutique Fitness Studio Feels the Impact

In London, Hannah Al-Khaldi, owner of a boutique fitness studio, estimated that the outage cost her business £1,000 in lost revenue. “It showed how many systems worldwide had put their eggs in one basket,” she remarked. “When one link in the chain fails, everything else goes down. Is there enough choice out there for providers, or was CrowdStrike the only option?”

For businesses like Hannah’s, the outage raised important questions about the reliance on single IT service providers and the potential consequences of such dependence.
